What Are You Fighting?

Quite a while back, I had a somewhat funny dream…

I was at home with my roommate and our cat, Bailey. All of the lights in the house were turned off and I was hearing and seeing a large mouse (or small rat, whichever it was doesn’t really matter... what matters is that is was a large pest!). Well I had decided that this mouse-rat was not going to live through the night, so I grabbed a broom and started the chase. I was the only one running around with the broom since my roommate decided she was just going to watch and be amused. I remember running around and being mad at Bailey, because she was not doing her job! Well my roommate was standing by the front door with the big door open and the screen door closed. I was standing by her at the door when I hear it make a huge mess in the pantry. So, I head that way and start swinging. This time, I could tell that I hit it. I felt the thud and the commotion seemed to stop. I then start sweeping it towards the open front door--stopping to bang on it a few times for good measure--but stopped just shy of the door. For some reason, I decided THAT MOMENT was the best time to turn on the lights. I flip the switch on, look down, and see the messy wad of yarn that Bailey plays with all the time. Before I can get too angry about all of the wrestling I just did over a wad of yarn, I look up and see my roommate just laughing away at the whole scene. I mean she was bent over and about to fall on the floor she was laughing so hard. I couldn’t help but laugh with her now. The entire thing must have looked absolutely ridiculous. If I had been watching it, I probably would have peed my pants. And that was it... the dream ended.

Well, as absurd as this whole dream sounded, I decided to go ahead and write it down in my journal during my quiet time the next morning and the coolest thing happened. As I wrote out the details of the dream--almost exactly as I did above--I began to see some revelation in it.

Sometimes we try to overcome things in our own strength, without turning to God (in the dark). We fight and struggle and wear ourselves out, but all we really have to do is turn on the light--invite God into our struggle! When we do that, we are able to see the problem for what is really is... NOTHING BUT A WAD OF YARN TO LAUGH AT. No matter what problems we are facing, aren’t they all just a wad of yarn when you size it up to our Almighty God? And I don’t say that to make light of any situation you may find yourself in. I say that to remind you and encourage you that we serve a HUGE God, and there is no problem too big and no struggle too hard for Him to handle. In fact, Jesus experienced everything we have been or are going through. He understands when no one else does or can. So who better to turn to?

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
